Venue
Car-parking: The college car park should have enough spaces available. The main car-park will be open from 6.15am. Additional car-parking is found at the side of the venue, off of Greater Paddock / Harrisons Lane. This area is restricted to marshals, officials and G.P.Tri’ members. Please do not park outside local shops on Lewes Road as they are open for trading on the bank holiday.
Public transport: The nearest train station is Lewes, which has good main line links to Brighton, Eastbourne and London. Local bus routes stop outside the venue.
Registration and race briefing: Registration is open from 06.35 to 07.45 and will be between the transition and the pool. Race briefing starts at 07.45 at the same location.
Bike racking: All the bike racking is numbered to correspond with individual race numbers. Please place your numbered sticker on your bike before entering transition. Helmets and bikes need to meet BTA standards. Visit www.britishtriathlon.org for the rules. Please keep your area tidy. If you arrive after 8am, please be careful as the transition area will be a hive of activity.
Swim
No diving is allowed at anytime. You will be disqualified (DQd) if you do. (The pool maybe warmer than you expect as it is heated to allow local primary school children to be comfortable during swimming lessons.)
Try-a-Tri is over 250 meters and each competitor will swim two lengths in each of the five lanes. After swimming down the first length from the far side of the pool’s shallow end, next to the wall, swim back up by the lane rope (anti-clockwise). At the end of this length, go under the lane rope into the next lane and repeat. Continue this until you reach the shallow end of the nearside of the pool. Exit via the fire exit, turn left and go to Transition (T1). Caution, the poolside will be slippery when wet and there is a small curb as you exit the pool building. There is a 100m or so to transition on concrete paths, so extra care should be taken on wet, exposed feet.
Swimmers with the slowest estimated swim times going first. There is a gap of 30 seconds between each competitor. If you catch up with the swimmer in front, please let them know by touching their feet to let them know that you are there. The person in front should then allow you to overtake once you get to the end of the length.
Sprint Triathlon is over 500 metres. This differs from the above as 3 or 4 swimmers of similar ability will be sharing one lane of the pool, just swimming in circles 20 times! The swim marshal will let you know when you have two laps left. Exit at the shallow end and then go to Transition (T1) through the fire-exit, which may be busy, so take care. Caution! The poolside will be slippery when wet and there is a small curb as you exit the pool building. Please count your own laps as a back up to the swim marshals timing you. (#G.P.Tri club members first and last.)
Swim Records (inc T1):
500m M Nick Ripley 07:20. F Helen Bullimore 09:46 (both 2007.)
250m M Chris Gorbell 05:25 (2009.) F Amicia Lee 05:29 (2007.)
T1
Mind the curbing and steps around the outside of the pool building into transition.
Once you have arrived in transition, put on your cycle hat and fasten it before removing your bike (see BTF rules). Ensure your race number is on your back so we can record your time when you start the cycle section. The mounting point will be marked with cones near the metal gates. This area will be marshalled. Be aware that both cyclists and runners maybe coming towards you and passing in front of you from the left respectively.
Bike route
http://www.mapmyrun.com/ride/united-kingdom/ringmer/164462749
You are about to join the highway so the Road Traffic Act (RTA) will apply to you. Failure to follow the RTA may result in a DQ.
Turn right and join Lewes Road. There is a compulsory stop and foot down before you turn right and join Lewes Road. This is for your safety and of that of other road users. A Police Officer or Marshall will be there to make sure that this rule is followed. Only join the highway once it is clear and safe to do so.
Head towards the mini-roundabout (please remember it’s the only roundabout in the course, this is important for future reference!), passing the Green Man pub. At the roundabout, turn right onto Laughton Road if it is safe to do so. The roundabout will be marshalled to help slow traffic and cyclists approaching it. The marshal does not have the power to stop traffic and certainly won’t remember how many laps you have done as 159 other bikes are going to pass him/her, some more than once! Please be prepared to stop if on-coming vehicles are also turning right as per the RTA. The bike course from now is anti-clockwise in direction.
Stay on this wide, fast road until entering Laughton village. Turn left into Shortgate. The turn will be signed posted, but be careful as it is a fairly sharp turn. If you pass the Roebuck Inn, you have gone too far. Shortgate is an undulating narrow country lane, so be careful if you overtake.
At the end of the lane is a “Give Way” sign. This is a compulsory stop! The marshals here will record your number if you do not stop to show that you have complied with this instruction. Failure to comply results in a 2 minute time penalty. A 2nd failure (sprint only) results in a DQ! Once the marshal says for you to continue double check for traffic from your right before you set off, turning left here onto Broyle Road. This is another wide, fast, undulating road that takes you back to the mini-roundabout. Don’t be attempted to draft! It is against the rules and penalties will be given by our BTF motorcycle referee.
On the re-approach to the mini-roundabout, slow down and prepare to stop! This is because it is harder to see the other lanes approaching the roundabout from this angle and car drivers are easily confused!
Try-a-Tri = 1 lap. If your exit is clear, proceed straight over the roundabout back onto Lewes Road and follow your way back towards where you started the bike course.
Community Sprint = 2 laps. Congratulations, you have finished the first lap, now turn left and do it all again!
At the end of the second lap, slow as before and then go straight across onto Lewes Road, and head back to transition.
It is your responsibility to count your laps and to listen to directions given during the briefing.
Sprint records: M Paul Blackmore 36:12 (2009) F Helen Bullimore 41:59 (2007.)
Novice: M Chris Gorbell 23:15 (2009) F Tracy Fuller 25:27 (2008)
T2
Slow down before going into the dismount area and beware of runners crossing at Lewes Rd. Dismount between the cones before entering transition and be on the look out as others as they maybe just starting out on the bike and run routes. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR HELMET UNTIL YOU HAVE SAFELY RACKED YOUR BIKE. Please wear your race number on your front so we can record your race time during the run section.
